Twist to the 60's Batiks, My Day

Hello, Thank you for stopping by my blog for this wonderful hop.
I would like to Thank Madame Samm and Mary Winegar for hosting and organizing a fantastic hop.  I also want to apologize to Madame Samm for not finishing what I wanted to show her since I made them with the Tokyo squares (the coolest fabric ever, is it a blender or a batik, both in a perfect world) that she gave me.

My very first fabric purchase last year in May 2012 when I first started sewing was some batik fabric from EBAY, I also got this Timeless Treasure print, so I thought "for sure" I should join in on this hop.
Organic fabric, with lot's of peace sign's on it.
The plan was to do a modern meets traditional twist on the Double Wedding Ring.
This was my first time doing Foundation paper piecing and I have decided I don't like it, the waste, it's crazy!  I have a jar of small scraps of fabric and a whole lot of my precious thread, plus the paper.  I am pretty sure I won't be ever doing it again, unless someone can tell me what to do with the little pieces of fabric and all of my thread?
The Plan

Plus it took a lot of time and now I am stuck on how to put them all together should I leave the paper in, or take it out and sew some curves or should ..... well as you can see I ran out of time.  I decided at 2 pm on Wednesday, when the kids wouldn't hang out with Grandma, that I better change gears and find something else to complete for the hop.

So I give you the Mom and Daughter Wristlet Set!

This is some of the fabric I bought on my first purchase it is a really cool batik that has embroidery already on it!  LOVE IT!
I made this for one of my Sister-in-Law and her daughter (my niece), they kind of match, but each one is different.  This is the third time I have made the pleated version, you can find the English Sub-titled You-Tube video here, and the pattern here.
The larger wristlet pattern can be found here, it was the first time making this one, it is a great pattern but I don't like the raw edges inside, so it will need to have a few changes.

I started making these 2 bags at 4:30 and finished them at 8:30 and that was with kids and animals interrupting.
When can I play with them Mommy!
Yes she thinks everything I make is for her, and if you ever get a gift from me, you will have to realize that my daughter probably fondled it first.
even fabric gets touched by her first, especially if it is pink.
Please make sure you go visit my other crafty creators for the day.

  1. I've never done foundation piecing before, but your project does look like fun - even though you had to waste a lot to make it! Those pouches are very cute and I'm sure the recipients will love them!

  3. You did a wonderful job on your paper pieced quilt! Hate to admit it, but that is the only way I can sew a straight line, lol!

  4. I love the precision that I can get with foundation piecing, but yes, it sure does eat up the fabric! Your idea for the interconnecting triangles is fantastic and if you can stand to work on it again, it will be magnificent.

Hey, I figure any fabric that has been fondled by a child is special fabric indeed! I used to let my girls play with all my scraps.

  5. Your wristlets are lovely!
I haven't done much foundation piecing but I didn't like the waste either!

  6. It would be a waste not to finish that! It looks absolutely gorgeous! All those beautiful colours! And since you've started..... It is true, there is a lot of waste. OK.... I would take out the paper (easier to quilt without, I've done both). The scraps, you could use for small appliqué work or in a quilt, where you need just a little piece. The really tiny ones....shred them and use them for stuffing. I love that your daughter wants to touch. Enjoy that....it will change!

  7. Lovely work! Anything you send out should probably include a slip...fondled by inspector 13 ;)

  8. I am with you on the foundation piecing, although the result is quite lovely. Make yours the centerpiece of a quilt or pillow. Your wristlets are darling.

  9. If you don't try it, you won't know, so nothing is for nothing. :-)
It looks wonderful, and I agree with Charlotte, use it as a center piece in a quilt.

  10. Me and paper piecing do not get along so I know I would not like foundation piecing either so I just never go there. I am happy in my own little world. :)

    Your little girl is precious!

Your purses are darling and I just want to hug your little Peace Kitty! Thanks so much for sharing! Oh..... I sometimes use my scraps from PP to stuff projects like pin cushions and stuffed animals.

  13. That was a huge challenge Mara!! I really do think it looks fantastic in your last picture, too. I don't have the patience for foundation piecing....not often anyway. I do it once in awhile, but not liking it!! Great job....the wristlets are great

  18. What a beautiful job you have done. You did a terrific job with your paper piecing.

  19. I feel the same way about paper piecing. I saved every little crumb and put it away because I know I will probably do it again. Love what you started though, and the wristlets came out beautiful, and your model is adorable. As is the peace sign kitty.

  20. I have to say that I love paper piecing. I find it relaxing to follow the lines and then to sit around watch a movie and pull out the paper. I think your paper pieced quilt is going to be beautiful. Thanks for sharing

  21. I like the accuracy of paper piecing. Your paper pieces are wonderful. DOn't stop. Put it together and it will be beautiful. Your bags are very nice. I love that we can share good, bad, family, and KITTENS. That peace sign is groovy.

  22. Great job, keep working at it. Love the peace sign on the kitty! Thank you for being part of this groovy hop.

  23. The wristlets are darling, but I love the foundation piecing! Great job!

How funny that the kitty has the piece sign on it's head!

  24. Your paper piecing is lovely. You just have to understand that the scraps of fabric and extra thread is the price you pay for accuracy and pointy points. I agree with your frustration. I paper piece all the time and just pass my scraps off to others who like to work with tiny pieces of fabric. Your wristlets are lovely!

  25. I love to paper piece, but you are so right about having some waste. Your piecing is beautiful! Those bags are too cute as is that darling little girl holding them.

  26. After my first go round with paper piecing, I came away with the same attitude you do. Hated it, hated it. But then I took a really great class at a quilt shop, and have come to love it. Yep there is waste for sure, but nothing give me more precision than paper piecing. I am a crazy fool with saving little scraps and pieces. I have a bunch of stuff saved to make an "art fabric" with soon.
For all your trouble, you have a stunning quilt for sure! I'm a bit intriqued to give one a try myself! :-)

  27. That quilt top is outta sight! I really dig those far out purses with little mini you, lol. I am so with you on the paper piecing I do not like it. I have only done small projects with pp. You can get accurate points and all, but all that paper you have to take off (unless it's a wall quilt then you could leave it on I suppose). It's a mess and a lot of work to me, but some people love it. So do what you like to do.

  28. I LOVE your original design! I think I would use starch to fold over the seam allowances and then applique all the curves by hand or machine onto a background fabric. SO cool! I only take the paper off when the pieces are sewn into the quilt top.

  29. your bags are wonderful. your little girl is the cutest. so is the kittie. thanks for sharing.

  30. I really like your paper pieced quilt. It will be fabulous when completed. The peace sign on your kitten is to darn cute.

  31. If the kitten has a peace sign on his little head...does that mean he's peaceful? I just adopted a stray that had to be a "teen" with amount of energy he has. Unbelievable and driving me nutz! I hope you'll give paper piecing another try. there is a "ruler" available to help eliminate wasting fabric. I used to do it a lot more than I do now but only becasue I'm now into english paper piecing. Good luck!

  32. Sometimes we just have to realize there is no time.. but the wristlets are great. I love PP and there is some you can pre-cut for. I know you will find a use for those scraps. Your inventive.. I am using my scraps up this week on a string quilt..thanks for the invite

  33. I really like your wristlets. And I think your quilt will be awesome when you finish it. I don't think I would like paper piecing either although I have never tried it. I think there is too much waste. I have tried EPP though to make hexies and I really like that. Thank you for sharing today.

  34. Foundation piecing is not for every one, I guess. I like to do it myself and a little waste for the sake of accuracy is okay with me. I love what you have so far. Did any of the commenters say to leave the paper in till you get it attached to something more stabilized. That is what I do. The wristlets are super cute and sure to be a hit with mother and daughter.

    ReplyDelete
  35. What cute little wristlets!! I have done a few PP and enjoyed it but there does seem to be a lot of waste.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Great! Wish I had your patience. Nice colors too. The bags are neat.

  37. I'm about to try PP and hope I will enjoy it but I've been warned about the waste. Love those wrist bags and your little kitty is adorable with his peace sign. Your daughter looks to be the number 1 fan of your work, she is very cute.

  38. Great wrist bags--sorry for the wasted time and fabric on your first project. I guess for every great project produced, we have to have some project flops. I love the picture of your daughter--you are lucky to have such a cute little helper.

  39. Looks like you have a quilter-in-the-works if she's already fondling fabric! :) I love that peep-a-boo fabric look - those batiks are totally groovy. I think your first project is way cool - just give it some room and I'll bet it'll all come together for you.

  40. I understand where you're coming from on the paper piecing! :) Nice recovery with the wristlets though!

  41. I can't remember names of songs but I can remember names of groups...the Shirelles, the Supremes, James Brown, MoTown!

  42. Your wrist lets purses are great. Thanks for sharing your creativity

  43. Your matching purses are beautiful. They are the perfect gift. I love your beginning project too. When I paper piece I try to cut all the triangles out of 2 inch (or what ever size) strip of fabric similar to the way I would cut them for regular piecing. Particularly if I am making a lot of the same block. This helps eliminate some of the waste. For those wacky shapes though, i just grab what ever fits. Keep at it, It will make a stunning finished project. Even if you just applique what you have onto a background. It is beautiful. Oh and take the paper out for sure. ;)

  47. Congratulations on tackling paper piecing, and you touched on exactly why I haven't yet done it, no waste around here! It drives me nuts too. The wristlets turned out very neat, and it's so nice of your daughter to test them for you, quality assurance of course. :) And adorable kitten, I'm a little jealous...

  48. Your purses are sweet as is your cute project tester. And paper piecing is certainly a time consuming project. Good idea for the quilt.

  49. Love that paper-piece project! Do finish! And the wristlets are cute and so are your little interrupters! ;)

  50. I agree with you about the waste of precious fabric and thread when paper piecing - but I do love the result. Your triangles will look amazing once they are all sewn together :-) I live in the land of batik so let me know if you ever want any more :-)
